Winemaker is John Seccombe, a scientist who worked at Thelema. He started 2013 in Chris Alheit’s cellar. SA-born and Plumpton-trained. Some red and white Sémillon interplanted and skin fermented. 39% Roussanne, 23% Chardonnay, 23% Sémillon, 15% bushvine Chenin Blanc . Whole bunch. Simple winemaking. Pale straw. Rich start, full and tastes as though it has some residual sugar. Then firm on the finish because he basket-presses hard. Wants ageability. Off dry. Loads of personality. (JR)

The 2013 Rocking Horse Cape White is a blend of Roussanne, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Semillon from vineyards between 18 and 33 years old, naturally fermented, hard pressing with no new oak with bâtonnage once a month. The name comes from a rocking horse made for John’s oldest daughter. It has a very fine bouquet with lemon curd, Japanese yuzu, praline and a touch of brioche that is well defined. The palate is medium-bodied and quite rounded on the entry with touches of white peach and apricot, leading to a very tense nectarine and white peach finish. This is just delicious.
