The 2017 Vouvray Le Mont Sec displays an intense golden-yellow color and a discreet, refreshingly pure, slightly flinty and reductive nose with chalk and ripe lemon notes. Lush, precise and piquant on the palate, with ripe, concentrated fruit and crystalline structure, this is a dense, smooth, beautifully balanced, very long, refined and rather linear Vouvray with fine, dusty/chalky tannins, concentrated lemon juice and lingering, highly stimulating acidity. This is a long-distance runner with great expression and finesse. Tasted in March 2019.

Moving to the Le Mont releases, the 2017 Le Mont Sec needs loads of air time to show at its best and didn’t really shine until day two. It has more chalky minerality and austerity compared to the Demi-Sec yet has brilliant honeyed grapefruit, tart green apple, wet stone, and sappy herb aromas and flavors that develop nicely with time in the glass, gaining richness, depth, and breadth with air. Medium-bodied, silky and elegant, with racy yet integrated acidity, it’s another wine that needs to be forgotten for a good 4-5 years, and it should evolve gracefully for a handful of decades.
Nuttier and more complex on the nose than their Le Haut-Lieu, honey and lemon on the palate with superb concentration and length. Has all the personality and layering of great Chenin, and ample ageing potential too. (RH)
