Mostly Tempranillo but some Graciano and Mazuelo. Deep crimson. Smells richer and deeper than the Asúa, but still beautifully fragrant with sweet red and black cherries, just a touch of leather and oak spice with dried-cherry sweetness and a pinch of vanilla. On the palate, more savoury thanks to the highly textured, chewy tannins that are starting to resolve but still need time or food. Intensely moreish and persistent. (JH)

85% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo, 5% Garnacha. Fermentation in oak, matured 2 years in French and American oak with another 2 years in bottle. RS 2.5 g/l. Along with the 2017 Contino Rioja Reserva (£22), these are great examples of the quality coming out of this famous house. Floral nose, vibrant and deep hue in the glass, very fine tannins and plenty of acidity to balance the fleshy red-fruit characters. Classic Rioja – fine stuff. (AWH)
