Bright, dark red. The nose shows an almost confectionery red fruit sweetness without any roasted character, with a hint of banana dissipating with aeration; smells like a New World Pinot. Superripe, concentrated and thick, conveying strong sucrosité to its candied primary fruit flavors. Finishes impressively long, with the ripe tannins buried in fruit. At once unctuous and tender, this wine should give early pleasure, but there's enough underlying rocky minerality to ensure a graceful evolution in bottle. This parcel is at the beginning of the Beaux Monts du Haut, notes Perrot-Minot.

The 2014 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru les Beaumonts was just a little reduced on the nose when I tasted it at the domaine, with dark berries here and powdered chalk, but it needs to show a little more finesse once in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly hard tannin. The acidity is nicely judged, but there is a touch of bitterness coming through on the abrupt finish. I think Christophe made better wines than les Beaumonts in 2014, but maybe it was just not showing on the day -- hence the question mark.
