Mainly barrel-fermented Grenache with a small proportion of Rolle (Vermentino), the 2019 Cotes de Provence Rose Les Clans is a pale, coppery wine. Subdued scents of pencil shavings accent notes of peach, pineapple and melon on the nose, underscored by hints of crushed stone. It's broad and generous in the mouth, full-bodied and richly textured—the product of copious bâtonnage during aging in demi-muids—with prominent notes of cedar on the mouthwatering finish.

Old-vine, morning-picked, optically sorted Grenache with Vermentino and Syrah 90% free-run juice and 100% gentle pressing. Destemmed. Fermented in new and second-year 600-litre demi-muids followed by 10 months' barrel ageing with stirring twice a week. Sacha Lichine has just doubled Ch d'Esclans' vineyard area to 148 ha by buying a neighbouring property. Expect production to increase. Light, fresh nose. It smells more like a white Vermentino than a rosé. Very gentle, luxurious texture is its strongest suit. Acidity is quite marked and the oak isn't, which is good. Persistent but still a little muted. (JR)
