A beautiful showing, the 2009 Clos Des Truffiers is as exotic as they come and offers a mammoth-sized bouquet of ripe black fruits, iodine, licorice, smoked game, truffle, and tapenade. Just gorgeous on the palate as well, it brings a massive amount of fruit yet stays balanced while delivering ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It doesn't quite have the precision of the 2001 or 2007, but it’s just an incredibly satisfying, Provençal, layered, singular beauty. It will continue evolving and drinking well over the coming decade and I suspect have a gradual decline after that as well.

Although I'm not as enamored of the super ripe style as my immediate predecessor, there's no doubting the tremendous quality of the 2009 Coteaux du Languedoc. It's enormously dark, rich and intense, yet it shows well-defined cherry fruit and peppery spice. Full-bodied and creamy in texture, it's somehow not overdone, although some brown-sugar notes creep in on the long, plush finish. It should drink well for at least another decade.
