Punteggio 89/100 · Da bere 2020-2035, Jeb Dunnuck, Mar 2020

For readers looking to understand the style of the vintage, the 2016 Saint Joseph from Guigal is a good place to start. Coming from multiple vineyards in the appellation and brought up in French oak, it has textbook notes of red and black raspberries, ground pepper, hints of spring flowers, and olives. Medium-bodied, silky, beautifully balanced and elegant, with a terrific core of sweet fruit, buy a case and enjoy bottles over the coming 10-15 years.

The 2016 Saint-Joseph features hints of crushed stone on the nose, rounded out by crisp cherry fruit on the medium-bodied palate. Hints of dried spices and peppery herbs appear on the soft, silky finish. This lacks the flesh of warmer vintages, but it still offers plenty of early-drinking appeal and will have fans for its more "classic" profile.

Opaque ruby. Spice-accented black/blue fruits, violet, olive and smoky minerals on the highly perfumed nose. Juicy and expansive on the palate, offering lively boysenberry, bitter cherry and cracked pepper flavors that become sweeter on the back half. The dark berry and floral notes repeat strongly on a spicy, persistent finish that's shaped by smooth, even tannins.

A wildly herbal and spicy, exotic style with aromas and flavors of red plums and cherries, as well as aged meat. Grainy, elegant tannins. Drink or hold.
