Once the touch of funk from long sur-lie maturation blows off, a lovely nose of lemon curd, yellow grapefruit and fresh pineapple unfolds. With more aeration, a touch of floral honey develops. In spite of the imposing structure, this is a very focused wine that has tremendous mineral freshness at the spectacularly bright, lemony finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

Tasted in Wiesbaden in August this year, the 2020 Pettenthal GG shows a clear, fresh, very reductive and still yeasty bouquet that indicates depth but doesn't really invite me at this stage. Juicy, elegant and with a linear structure, this is a dense and intense, sustainably salty Pettenthal that needs a lot of time in the bottle (or on the air), but then it will repay.
South of Rothenberg, a bit rockier and higher at 90–170 m. The Rheinhessen's steepest site with very thin topsoil. Certified organic. Aged in 1,200-litre casks. RS 3 g/l, TA 7 g/l. Smoky nose with a strong mineral element. Savoury, even saline on the palate. Already quite evolved and it smells somehow – in a good way – slightly dusty. Crushed rocks perhaps? A bone-dry finish.
