The 2017 Fleurie Clos Vernay was unaffected by hail according to Frédéric Lafarge. It has a deep, blueberry and raspberry coulis scented bouquet, and hints of crushed iris developing with aeration. The palate is grippy and firm on the entry, quite dense for a Fleurie with a masculine, structured finish that suggests this will repay cellaring. It is a Fleurie with ambition.

The clos is 1.3 ha. Bottled. Aged in 30-hl foudre. Hard to find good second-hand foudres – he would use this size vessel for all his beaujolais if he could. On granite and quartz. Not hailed. Much less obviously sweet-fruited than the blended Fleurie. Such incredible fruit purity on the nose, red cherry and cranberry. So fragrant. On the palate, more mineral and dry with a tannic finesse that is all about the site. Moreish and mouth-watering. Extremely fine tannins. (JH)
Tasted from barrel, the 2017 Fleurie Clos Vernay is more expressive, its floral bouquet of red fruits and sweet cocoa complemented by savory bass notes of game bird. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, juicy and ample, with fresh acids and firm, chalky structuring tannins.
