Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2020-2035, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Sep 2018

The 2015 Morgon Côte du Py is a deep, brooding wine, unfurling in the glass with notes of spicy dark fruits, baking chocolate and rich soil tones. On the palate, it's full-bodied, super concentrated and powerful, with lovely acids, fine-grained tannins and a rich but vibrant finish. While it's atypically imposing and large-scaled, it's a very persuasive rendition of the balmy, dry 2015 vintage, and it looks likely to handsomely repay cellaring.

Deep vivid ruby. Vibrant aromas of black raspberry, cherry cola and violet pick up allspice and licorice nuances with air. Juicy, concentrated and subtly sweet, offering bitter cherry and dark berry flavors that become deeper and sweeter with air. The floral note comes back strongly on the impressively long finish, which features sneaky tannins, lingering spiciness and a touch of vanilla.

Tank sample. Dark crimson. Sweet, charming fruit with some ‘minerality’. Racy, pacy and I’m sure it will eventually be rewarding. (JR)

50-year-old vines. Blue volcanic rocks. Gobelet and cordon pruning. Yield: 32 hl/ha with 7,100 and 10,000 plants/ha. Sustainable viticulture. Destemmed. 23-day maceration with punchdowns and pumpovers in stainless-steel and cement vats. Malolactic in barrels. Aged in 40% new barrels and 60% old barrels. Inky black cherry colour with purple rim. Overwhelmed by new oak spice and sweetness on the nose. There’s great fruit underneath but only buy this if you want oak sweetness – vanilla and caramel aftertaste and barrel-thickened tannins. Please don’t do this to Beaujolais. Maybe time will allow the fruit to escape the oak. (JH)
