I continue to think Clos des Truffiers makes one of the great Syrahs of the world, and the 2018 isn’t going to change that opinion. Coming from some of the oldest Syrah vines in the Languedoc (not far from Faugères) and brought up in new French oak, the 2018 Clos des Truffiers sports a dense purple color as well as brooding, backward notes of blackcurrants, smoked meat, chocolate, beef blood, iodine, and scorched earth. Where the Porte du Ciel is upfront and already hard to resist, this is a denser, more concentrated, tannic Syrah with beautiful mid-palate depth, flawless balance, and a great finish. It’s unquestionably a brilliant wine, yet the cellar is going to be your friend on this one.

The glass-staining purple mass that is the 2018 Clos des Truffiers is (as always) an exercise in intensity and power, yet it's not without a certain degree of elegance—the extraction is gentle, the tannins soft and creamy-plush in texture. Notes of blueberries, blackberries, vanilla, licorice and cocoa swirl about, providing immense pleasure in this full-bodied beauty that never seems heavy or overdone. Despite all the power, it's deceptively easy to drink, even at this early stage of its evolution. It should drink well for at least a decade after its release.
