I found the tannin to be a touch too present in the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape, yet it still offers a big, rich style, as well as ample dark fruits, charred meats and dried herbs aromas and flavors. I’d drink bottles over the coming handful of years while the fruit still dominates.

The 2006 Domaine Giraud Châteauneuf-du-Pape has an earthy, meaty personality with copious roasted herb and garrigue aromas leading into a balanced, medium bodied palate. The richness, texture and fat to the fruit should keep this drinking well over the next 10 years.
Ruby-red. Powerful scents of cherry and blackcurrant, plus a warm note of brown spices. Fleshy, vaguely sweet kirsch and dark chocolate flavors are brightened by zesty spice and pepper qualities. More energetic than it showed last year, with good finishing cling.
Dark crimson. Very heady nose – masses of alcohol and ripe black fruit with a hit of leather and apparently quite enough freshness. Very jubilant, almost triumphant cocktail of ripe fruit and spices with excellent acid balance. Tannins very fine. Plump and bumptious. Hint of liquorice too. Lots of pleasure even if not for the very long term. (JR)
