The 2019 Block 5 Pinot Noir is rich and savory, with dark, intense fruit and firm tannins. The wine lingers long after it is gone, and it seems due to the tannic structure that the fruit endures through it all. This Pinot has freshness and detail, albeit on a darker spectrum this season. It is elegant and firm, with clove, fennel and aniseed through the finish. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

An alluring style that draws you in with its silken texture. It is pure, inviting and might be called sumptuous if not for an arrow-like line of acidity and whole-bunch-derived sappiness bringing up the rear, taking that ethereal texture and urging this wine forward. The finish is interminable, with satisfying savory, spicy characters persisting alongside woody herbs and broody black fruit. At 14.5% alcohol, there is the merest hint of heat, which is the only minor gripe in this near-perfect Central Pinot.
Fruit from Block 5 of Elms Vineyard (vine age mostly 26 years). 25% whole cluster. 16 months' élevage (longer than the other 2019 Felton Road Pinots) in 30% new oak. Smudgy, transparent garnet with a pale rim. Heady nose – much richer and more opulent than the Block 3. Sweet with a hint of coffee. Not as fresh and appetising as the Block 3 – a little more Russian River than Sonoma Coast? You could enjoy it already. The fruit overwhelms the tannin. In fact it's almost impossible to sense the tannin! I may be being mean with my score but it expresses my personal preference. (JR)
