Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2024-2040, Neal Martin, Aug 2021

The 2017 Côte de Brouilly Godefroy comes from a small parcel of vines whose exact birth year is unknown, although they are at least a century old. Raised entirely in foudres , it has a vivacious, quite feisty bouquet of maraschino cherries, cranberry jus and a touch of menthol, all very concentrated. The palate is bold and tannic with fine depth and gentle grip. This is a Côte de Brouilly with a surfeit of substance and persistence but still youthful and requiring another 3–4 years in bottle. Superb.

Brilliant magenta. Powerful, sharply delineated aromas of ripe, mineral-tinged red berries, cherry and candied flowers, along with slowly emerging suggestions of exotic spices and musky earth. Juicy and energetic in style, offering palate-staining raspberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors and an exotic touch of succulent herbs. Finishes sweet, velvety and impressively long, leaving rose pastille and smoky mineral notes behind.

Prepare to be amazed by this radical Côte-de-Brouilly, which is fragrant and delicate on the nose, but has a very firm core of minerals and fine tannins that drive the very long finish. Drink or hold.

One of three single-vineyard wines catching the rising sun because it faces east. 100% whole bunch. Vines aged 100+ so stems are ripe. Some remontage and they use grids to keep to the cap submerged (similar to header boards). Just bottled. Bright purple crimson. Dark-red fruit, more peppery and closed and less expressive than the Clos Bertrand. Chewy, compact, yet full of vibrant fruit though currently all tied up in that structure. Savoury, spicy, long finish. All to come. (JH)
