Rocking the new label and proprietary glass, the 2022 Sauvignon Blanc is excellent. It’s soft and floral, with lashings of green apple, sweet pea, pink grapefruit, white currant, coriander and even kiwi fruit. Sensational wine. Cloudy Bay has a big reputation for a reason. They age, too, so keep that in mind. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Key vineyards: Motukawa, Mustang and Widows. The vineyards are very close to the winery so there is no appreciable skin contact. Just two small vineyards of the more than 100 ingredients are more distant. 5% lees stirred. 5% oak component. Free-run juice and six or seven different yeasts are used, as well as flotation experimentally, which is thought to build quality. Real grip. Dry and savoury. Quite sophisticated. (JR)
Blended from 109 batches (up to 25% are rejected). Lime juice, grassy, pure and intense. Impressively textural and powerful with great clarity of fruit. The acid is bright and persistent but the fruit keeps up. It is still a flag-bearer for the region. (RH)
Full, embossed, smartly screwcapped bottle 1,325 g. I wonder how much the bottle contributed to the costs of this? A blend of 77 different components from a ‘difficult’ vintage. 5% oak-fermented. Very stinky nose – more so than I can remember from any previous vintage. They clearly want the wine to be markedly ‘minerally’. Bone dry finish – a reflection of current wine fashions. Very crisp and dry! Defiantly expensive. (JR)
