Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2018-2025, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Dec 2018

The 2001 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques from Jean-Marie Fourrier is lovely, wafting from the glass with aromas of wild berries, crushed cassis, dried flowers and sweet underbrush. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and bright, with a deep, layered mid-palate, framed by velvety tannins and succulent acids and a compelling sense of purity and equilibrium. The finish is tangy and subtly chalky. This is a superb Clos Saint-Jacques that's drinking beautifully now.

This controversial wine that has attracted considerable criticism for cork taint, was initially going to be poured but was withdrawn from the line-up in the event. 'I'm really sorry for the 2001 lottery', is how Fourrier put it. (JR)

Saturated medium red. Wild, musky aromas of redcurrant, coffee and smoke. Large-scaled and sweet for a wine from this vineyard, but also complex and suave, if rather closed at present. Shows an intriguing mineral quality as well as lower-pitched earth tones. Distinctly gamey today: be sure to decant this if you want to try a bottle anytime soon. Finishes with sizable dusty tannins.

(the malolactic fermentation finished a couple weeks prior to my visit) Good red-ruby. Perfumed aromas of dark berries and flowers. Very concentrated and intensely flavored, and already showing a compelling creamy sweetness. Very chewy and dense but with excellent verve. Long on the aftertaste. From very small berries, and it shows. (A supple, full Combe aux Moines showed lovely gamey complexity and impressive persistence, but was barely 25% of the way through malo.)
