Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2023-2033, Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, May 2011

The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques engages all of the senses with its cool, mineral-laced fruit and expressive bouquet. This shows marvelous tension and energy, not to mention fabulous overall balance. It could not be more different in style than the 2009 tasted alongside it. Both are fabulous, though. The 2008 is one of the more backward wines of the vintage and will require considerable patience. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2033. Count me among the Burgundy fans who are thrilled Jean-Marie Fourrier chose not to pursue the career as a commercial airline pilot for which he studied. Fourrier began picking on September 17. In 2009 the fruit was destemmed. Cuvaison lasted around 14 days but Fourrier commented that he had an unusually high (50%) amount of shot berries, which had the effect of extending the fermentations for another week or so. The malos started and ended early, hence Fourrier decided to bottle early as well. Per his usual practice, Fourrier left the wines on the lees with no racking until the wines were prepared for bottling. On average the wines saw 20% new oak. I tasted all of the 2009s from bottle. Medium red. High-pitched aromas of red cherry, raspberry, rose petal, white pepper and crushed stone. Dense and silky in texture but with great juiciness, clarity and lift thanks to piquant acidity and stony minerality. This saturates the palate with fruits and flowers yet comes off as virtually weightless. An explosive hint of pepper accentuates the impression of lift, but there's nothing green about this beauty. My style of Burgundy.

(malo finished in early October) Good medium red. Pristine aromas of red cherry, raspberry and rose petal. Wonderfully sappy and high-pitched, with terrific energy to the flavors of red fruits, flowers, spices and orange zest. This very refined wine is savory rather than overly sweet, conveying a strong impression of soil and finishing with terrific length and lift. Finishes with palate-dusting tannins and lingering spicy perfume. Fourrier hoped to bottle this by early February.

Mid cherry red. Quite heady. A rather light version of Clos St-Jacques. Pure but certainly not a knock out. Also tasted 7 Jan 2010. Score 17.5. Drink 2013-19: Turkish Delight flavours. Real life and this wine seems to have deepened since late November. (JR)
