Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2018-2036, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Feb 2018

From volcanic soils and a very steep vineyard with vines that are over 70 years of age and old genetics, the 2016 Nahe Riesling Stromberg "GG" opens with a super clear, pure, fresh and flinty/smoky bouquet with beautifully stony and coolish/herbal aromas. This is fascinating in its precision and coolish expression. On the palate, this is a dense and concentrated but finessed, elegant, highly mineral and well-structured Riesling with intense juicy fruit and gorgeous persistence. Salty, firm and expressive, this is another great Riesling from Tim Fröhlich. Tasted December 2017.

Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2018-2038, David Schildknecht, Vinous, Sep 2017

Cooling basil and mint join piquant huckleberry and zesty lime on the nose as well as on an implosively concentrated palate almost austere in its impression of crushed stone and smoky black tea infusion. “You can taste that this is the stoniest site we farm, with almost no real soil,” suggested Fröhlich, who quite accurately characterizes it as “the sleekest and straightest of my volcanic wines.” Yet the cooling, bittersweet herbal aura wafts throughout, helping assuage that sense of austerity, as does an influx of fresh lime and white peach juiciness. This finishes with almost shocking penetration and with vibrancy bordering on mouth-shaking – one of those instances where one seems to detect the influence of ancient, largely ungrafted vines as a transmission of energetic life force. Here’s further profound testimony to the awesome potential of a vineyard site very few wine lovers have heard of and that seems to have remained underappreciated down through the centuries!

A little more muted on the nose than the Felseneck – and more evolved. Already a driven, delicious drink with a strong green streak but masses of ripe fruit. Fine and a great mouthful of fruit. (JR)
