Punteggio 17.5/20 · Da bere 2023-2030, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, Apr 2023

A subtle but definite fumy, herbal first impression, along with punchy, ripe stone fruit. Broad-flavoured, with pear and citrus flavours and lots of spice. A big and beautifully balanced wine. Rich and yet so fresh. Glorious in a distinctive style. (JH)

The tremendously deep nose transports you to a spice market in East Asia. Also delicate notes of tropical fruit. Yet, on the palate this great dry Mosel is very compact and tightly wound. Only medium-bodied, but there’s enormous concentration, married to hauntingly austere beauty. The very finely chiseled and slatey finish extends out towards infinity. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Grown in Devonian slate, laced with iron. A distinctly stony, savoury and cool thread marks this Riesling from nose through palate. Citrus underscored with ripe pear and spice. Initially supple, it quickly settles into a razor-sharp and dizzyingly powerful pace. Structured by extreme herbal notes and spice, even as it maintains an enticing and inexplicably approachable nature. Deep and balanced acidity with a long saline finish. (PS)

The intensely colored 2020 Uhlen Roth Lay is precise and intense on the deep and concentrated, flinty-mineral but also aromatic nose that combines a ripe and rich but healthy fruit aroma with crushed slate tones. Still slightly reductive on the nose, the palate is singing. It is fine and fresh, very elegant and crystalline, provided with persistent grip and salinity and remarkable intensity and concentration. The finish is long and complex and very promising. Less challenging compared to the former vintages, maybe more generous and mouth-filling yet with less drama and tension. Time will tell us more about its talents. Tasted as a sample in Wiesbaden in August 2021.
