The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin La Petite Chapelle 1er Cru has a very capable nose. A mixture of red and black fruit, subtle sous-bois scents and just a hint of incense percolates through with time in the glass—very suave. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, taut and fresh, and quite linear in style, but there is pedigree in this wine. This shows the best salinity on the finish of the five Gevrey Premier Crus in this flight, though as it opens in the glass, I suspected there may be some TCA evident. This evidences excellent winemaking, but I’m not convinced this is a representative bottle vis-à-vis my barrel score. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru is another cuvée that boasts impressive transparency on the nose of ebullient red berry fruit mixed with graphite and light undergrowth aromas. The palate is well balanced with fine-grained tannins and edgy red berry fruit laced with graphite, segueing toward a persistent finish that leaves residues of allspice and clove. Excellent.
