2015 Sugrue Cuvee BOZ Blanc de Blancs

Ripe nose with a vegetal sweetcorn note plus cooked citrus fruit. On the palate, a sudden and surprising herbal leafiness comes first, then a long and complex fruit-driven palate – wow, this is such an impressive palate! At least as complex and noteworthy as many prestige cuvées from champagne, but with its own English imprint – something of the hawthorn and hedgerow note for which the region is renowned. (RH)

100% Chardonnay. Grapes sourced from Hampshire, no oak. Dosage 9 g/l. Richer, deeper nose than some. Tiny bead. Really quite accomplished winemaking though there's a little greenness of fruit there. A bit of follow-through and a serious wine, though it might come as a bit of a shock to those unfamiliar with English sparkling wine. (JR)

An intriguing mix of cream, vanilla and smoke makes for a dramatic opening. Creamy mousse defines the palate, expressing salty oyster shell and preserved lemon, shortbread richness and subtle saltiness. The smoky echo returns on the finish which is of pristine lemon expressing depth and soaring freshness in equal measure. The finish is pure and lasting. Lay this down and you will have treasure. Drink by 2035.
