Punteggio 89/100 · Da bere 2022-2028, Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, Dec 2022

Beginning with a hint of reduction, the 2019 Syrah offers savory aromas with a firm, red fruit skin essence, dusty florals and notes of red and black spice. Medium to full-bodied, the palate provides still-tight tannins and an underlying spicy core before swaying with a firm mineral tension. The wine concludes with a spicy and savory finish that will benefit from decanting. Made with 60% whole-bunch Syrah, just over 27,000 bottles were filled after resting for 18 months in Stockinger barrels.

Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2022-2028, Jancis Robinson MW, Jun 2022

Full bottle 1,352 g. 100% Syrah (called so from 1997). Vines planted up to 20 years ago Porseleinberg (Mullineuxs' blueish Schist vineyard) and 30% planted 15 years ago on the Goldmine property (brown schist). Made in Franschoek. All Syrah fermented in Stockinger nowadays. Ambient-yeast ferment. Mid blackish crimson and pale rim. Very warm and comfortable on the nose. Fresh and well balanced. Hugely satisfying. Great undertow. Really long. Delightful. (JR)

Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2023-2040, Neal Martin, Nov 2021

The 2019 Syrah is very perfumed on the nose, offering black cherries, boysenberry, pressed rose petal and incense. This really expresses the variety with style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained, supple tannins and well-judged acidity. Smooth and intense, yet quite gentle and caressing on the finish. This is a delicious Syrah that should drink well for 15–20 years.

The 2019 Syrah from Boekenhoutskloof was a worthy follow-up to the Tinta Barocca. It remains youthful on the nose. More red fruit tinged with wilted violet and peony, it gains fruit intensity and incense with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and an insistent grip, perhaps not quite as “caressing” as before, yet with wonderful sapidity on the finish. You could drink this now, but don’t be afraid to hold it back for another year.
