Family-run Austrian distillery Rochelt’s favoured quince, called Ronda, comes from upper Austria. When fully ripe, the pear-shaped fruit is yellow and golden in colour. The quince is harvested at the end of October to ensure it is at its ripest. Once harvested, the quince is fermented and distilled in the Tyrolean tradition. It is then aged in glass demijohns for several years before being filled into Rochelt’s distinctive green pincer bottles, by hand, at 50% alcohol.

The Eau de Vie Quince starts off quite subtle and then explodes through the mid-palate and into the finish. Strong mineral and earthy undertones give the Quince uncommon complexity to play off fruit flavors. Deep and expansive, with tons of character, the Quince is wonderfully complete, but also quite imposing. There’s a ton of power and substance here, with an almost phenolic quality that lingers on the finish. This is one of four eau de vies in Rochelt’s gift box set.

Rochelt is a prestigious Austrian producer of high-quality eaux de vie made in the Tyrolean tradition. The distillery started life in brothers Günter and Dietmar Rochelt’s cousin’s garage when they began experimenting with wild rowanberry distillation in the 1970s.
