1972 Vosne Romanee Les Chaumes

At 50 years of age this 1972 Vosne-Romanée, Premier Cru, Les Chaumes from Daniel Rion is in fantastic form and a treat for lovers of mature Burgundy. While fully developed on the nose, the wine remains remarkably clean, balanced and structurally sound. The nose is always evolving and complex – still retaining hints of dried rose petal and cherry aromatics that develop to sweeter sultana and hoisin notes and more savoury truffle, forest floor, mushroom, and dark balsamic aromas. There is a vitality on the palate that is quite incredible considering the age. This does evolve quite considerably in the glass as you would expect, the purity of black cherry fruit comes to the fore and the way the freshness of the acidity interplays with the lush, resolved tannins is superb.
