The 2019 Riesling Krettnacher Euchariusberg Auslese comes from (and, in tiny print, is now labeled for) the parcel nicknamed “Förster,” and it represents the estate’s sole Auslese of the vintage. It’s still a bit marked by reductive fermentative aromas even when tasted approaching two years after bottling, but that is of little concern in an Auslese whose concentration – to say nothing of it track record – suggests it will be very long-lived. Scents of pineapple and very ripe pear usher in a generously juicy and ultra-delicate palate reflecting a mere 7% alcohol – yet, unlike the overwhelming majority of Mosel Auslesen this low in alcohol, by no means overly sweet. Granted, it flirts briefly with the tendency of 2019s toward the syrupy, but then it’s checked on the impressively sustained finish by bright, animatingly tangy acidity in the guise of pineapple, orange and lime, while also testifying to its origins through decisive transparency to wet stone. It has become a popular practice among German winegrowers to refer to certain of their Riesling Auslesen – especially if there is a pair of them in one and the same vintage collection – as “drinking Auslese” or, to be strictly adjectival, as trinkig . After being compelled to swallow a few sips of this Euchariusberg – as if anyone’s arm would need to be twisted! – they might well be embarrassed to make that claim for any of their own Auslesen.

From another old-vines single plot that is located at the peak of the hill on gray slate and quartzite soils, the 2019 Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Auslese #5 Förster opens with stony, herbal and super ripe Riesling notes on the nose, indicating a certain over-ripeness, possibly with a touch of botrytis. Juicy and elegant on the palate, this is a charming and digestible Auslese with a firm finish and some grippy tannins. More rustic than fine. Tasted in May 2020.

AP number 05 20 – ‘ Förster ’ . RS 75 g/l. Pungent and unformed on the nose. Big, bold sweetness – very juicy passion-fruit flavours. Quite forward and very exuberant rather than subtle. (JR)
