Pinot Noir grown on German soils, aka Spätburgunder. As the duo cut their teeth in Burgundy, they know Pinot clones differ enormously, hence they label this by its German name. This fruit comes from three vineyards, all on loess soils and biodynamically farmed. The majority comes from the Kaiserstuhl, with the other two sites located just south of Staufen, on the edge of the Black Forest. Two-thirds of the fruit was destemmed, fermenting naturally in a large open-top oak vat. One-third was left whole cluster (from a vineyard which produces particularly lovely bunches) in stainless steel. Maceration took place for 15 and 19 days respectively. Addition of a very small amount of sulphites after one year in barrel (10 ppm), and a tiny bit extra at bottling (20 ppm). Unfined and unfiltered. Transparent ruby. Light but well-integrated nose and very floral on the palate with attractive grip and freshness. A refreshing Pinot Noir that is unmarked by oak and is bone dry. Racy and fairly light. Not for ageing, I think, and not for those seeking richness in their Pinot, but lots of lively fun. (JR)

From purchased fruit grown in diverse vineyards on sandy, loess-loam soils in the Kaiserstuhl district (namely, the Jechtingen Eichert single vineyard), the Wasenhaus 2018 Spätburgunder opens with a concentrated, tart and spicy bouquet with vegetal and some toasty oak aromas intermixed with notes of dark, thick-skinned cherries. Silky, pure and fresh on the palate, this is a firm, pure, fresh and juicy yet bone dry Spätburgunder with blackcurrant notes on the straight, clear and fresh finish. It fermented for 15-18 days with a prominent portion of whole clusters and aged in oak vats for 18 months. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted from lot L/182 in July 2020.
