The 2019 Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling Spätlese (Auction) is fabulously clear, fresh, flinty and concentrated on the precise and coolish nose with its perfect Riesling aromas. Round, piquant and lively on the palate, with great finesse and a delicious mouthfeel, this is a sensual, lush and beautifully balanced Spätlese with a salty-piquant and highly stimulating finish. This is one of the finest and most filigreed yet tensioned and stimulating Spätlesen that have been bottled in the Mosel Valley from the 2019 vintage. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

AP number 37 20. Quite a bit of spontaneous-fermentation yeast aroma. Really quite rich – surely on the cusp of an Auslese? Tingly tightrope between ripe fruit and acidity. Mouth-filling and satisfying. A saline hint on the finish. Very appetising and only slightly chewy on the end even at this early stage. (JR)
