FINE+RARE, Jan 2021

This fruit-driven, moreish Côtes du Rhône is a gem. A bright and inviting nose of cherry and blueberry, with underlying spice lead to a full palate with an extra ounce of complexity. It’s full-bodied, but with balancing acidity and delicious tannin. Dried herbs and bold fruit show this to be a serious wine – especially for the price tag. Not one to miss: pure enjoyment.

Juicy and upfront, with a mix of boysenberry and raspberry notes lined with licorice and floral hints through the silky finish. Very tasty. Grenache and Cinsault.

The cherry-scented 2019 Cotes du Rhone Beatus Ille also boasts intricate garrigue shadings, which bring welcome complexity and a slightly savory overtone to the bold, fruity aromas and flavors. It's full-bodied, supple and round in the mouth, with silky tannins on the licorice, rosemary and bay leaf-inflected finish. It should drink well for 3-4 years. While well-heeled consumers fight over the limited volumes of the super 2018 Collection Charles Giraud and Reserve Auguste Favier, the smart money will be chasing the regular bottlings of red and white Châteauneuf du Pape. The 2019 Côtes du Rhône Beatus Ille is almost as good, and it retails around $20—an even better bargain.
