Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2026-2036, Josh Raynolds, Jan 2023

Vivid ruby. Displays vibrant, mineral-driven red and blue fruit, licorice, exotic spice and potpourri scents that show superb detail and a touch of botanical herbs. Stains the palate with sweet, incisive cherry, boysenberry, spicecake and lavender flavors that deepen quickly with air. Conveys an uncanny blend of richness and finesse and finishes wonderfully long and precise, with smoothly interwoven tannins and reverberating floral and mineral notes.

Up there among the best Gigondas I've ever reviewed, the 2018 Gigondas le Poste combines considerable complexity with incredible intensity and adds a seductive measure of suppleness without sacrificing length or focus. Violet and aniseed aromas accent plums and black cherries on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and velvety in texture, with a long, silky finish that folds in notes of salted licorice.

Another sensational wine, the 2018 Gigondas Le Poste comes from a hillside parcel just up from the domaine, just to the east of the village of Gigondas. Deep ruby/purple-hued with killer notes of blackcurrants, ground pepper, violets, tobacco leaf, and obvious minerality, it’s full-bodied, has a fleshy, layered, opulent texture, building tannins, and a great, great finish. It shows the more approachable style of the vintage yet still brings incredible richness and depth. It will blow you away any time over the coming 10-15 years. Always one of my favorite tastings in the Rhône is with Château de Saint Cosme’s Louis Barruol and this feisty, talented, and passionate vigneron makes some of the best wines in France. The estate is located just outside the village of Gigondas and the lineup has been simplified today to include a classic Gigondas and three single vineyards. The wines are all made in the same fashion, with no destemming and aging in just about 100% used barrels, so what you get is a clean expression of each of the vineyards. Looking at the 2018s, these are undoubtedly more plush, soft, charming wines, yet they are still going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and should evolve beautifully. The 2019s look to be on another level, and my money is on this being another truly special vintage from this estate. These are gorgeous wines across the board, and I certainly have plenty in my personal cellar.

100% Grenache. Aged in oak (20% new). Tank sample. Tasted blind. Pure red fruit with lots of modern polish. Firmly tannic palate and a dry, spirity finish. Substantial and grainy, with convincing ageability thanks to that primary fruit. (RH)
