FINE+RARE, Mar 2020

The wines from Jean-Louis Dutraive in Beaujolais are celebrated by those in the know for producing some of the greatest Fleurie in the region. An estate that flies somewhat under-the-radar, we're delighted to offer their superb 2018 Fleurie La Madone today. From a brilliant vintage and producer, this is a gem that wine lovers will delight to have in the portfolio. Creating ethereal, aromatically complex wines that are almost Burgundian in style, these wines are some of the top examples of the new low intervention style of Beaujolais. Beautifully perfumed and with a distinctive character that makes them stand out from the crowd these "can be some of the best in Beaujolais" according to Neal Martin. William Kelley notes that "these are bottles that encapsulate everything that makes Fleurie great: extravagant perfume, succulent acids, satiny tannins." Dutraive's Fleurie La Madone is no exception. The estate itself "is a reference for wine growing and quality in Fleurie and beyond" for James Suckling. 2018 continues the trend of excellent vintages in the region, and the Fleurie La Madone as a result has an incredible depth to its layered aromatics, with a richly concentrated palate and "closes impressively long and smooth, with resonating florality."

Youthful purple. Expansive, mineral- and spice-accented raspberry, cherry and floral pastille aromas show outstanding clarity and pick up a subtle hint of gaminess as the wine opens up. Stains the palate with sweet red/blue fruit flavors that display both depth and vibrancy. Firms up stealthily on an impressively long, floral- and mineral-driven finish that's given shape by smooth, well-knit tannins.
