This auctioned product of thoroughly botrytized fruit selected out over a wide range of parcels is dominated by jellied, overripe quince and peach. Lauer described it as “BA-styled” and certainly 173 grams of residual sugar met by a mere 6.1 grams of acidity translates into sweetness one would more typically associate with a Beerenauslese. Somehow, though, this avoids coming off as irredeemably syrupy or sticky. The finish is soothingly honeyed and intensely fruity, though I miss nuance, counterpoint or complexity. With time in bottle, perhaps those will emerge. I don’t doubt the wine’s sheer aging potential. (In keeping with recent loosening of past legal restrictions – or perhaps merely looking the other way – the label here bears the initials “LGKA” for “Lange Goldkapsel Auslese.”)

Made from slightly dried, overripe and shriveled berries, Lauer's 2018 Kupp Auslese LGK –Versteigerung– (LGK means Long Gold Capsule) was picked with 120° to 125° Oechsle. It opens with a beautifully clear, clean and highly aromatic bouquet of perfectly ripe and healthy stone fruits, lemon zest and grapefruits but also topical aromas such as ripe bananas and yellow melons intermixed with very discreet leather and animal notes. Lush and round on the palate, this is a highly finessed, elegant, beautifully balanced and salty Auslese with a highly stimulating finish. This wine has amazing finesse and delicacy, and the freshness on the finish is amazing. An extraordinary Auslese. Tasted in June 2019.
