Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2020-2035, David Schildknecht, Vinous, Jul 2020

This Euchariusberg Kabinett issues from the same 50-year-old vines in the long-renowned Gross Schock sector as did last year’s “regular” Euchariusberg Kabinett (which also bore the A.P. #12), though this year there is a second otherwise eponymous bottling (in addition to the “Alte Reben”) that I did not taste. Ripe apple and honeydew melon are tinged with iris and gentian on a haunting nose. The palate is polished and buoyant, setting the stage for a wafting finish transparent to underlying wet stone; an influx of grapefruit adds welcome brightness. This offers an impeccable illustration of what oenophiles raised on residually sweet examples would call “typical Kabinett” virtues.

The 2018 Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett (AP 12) fermented until March this year and was stopped with a dose of SO2. The wine displays a very clear, pure, fresh and yeasty brioche bouquet with ripe and concentrated fruit aromas. Rich and lush on the palate, this is a mouth-filling yet precise, fresh and mineral Euchariusberg with challenging minerality and grip. A baby but promising. Tasted in June 2019.

AP-8. To be released in June 2019. This smells somehow honeyed and tart at the same time. Lime and wet stones, apricot and smoke, herbs too. Wonderful arrow-like purity and the balance between sweetness and acidity is so good that it is hard to say if it tastes dry or not (not quite). Intense, linear and wonderfully precise lines. (JH)
