Only four barrels made. Planted in 1985 on Paardeberg Farm – not part of the Old Vine Project (OVP) – yet. Shale vineyard, as evinced by the name. Shale from Porseleinberg. David explained that the style of this wine is associated with granite, but this is broader with tension. TA 6.5 g/l post MLF. Bone dry and spreads right across the palate. Minerals and lime. Masses of acidity. Real skein of purity. Concentrated by drought. (JR)

The 2017 Skaliekop Chenin Blanc comes from shale veins on the foothills of Paardeberg Mountain. It has an intense bouquet that is probably a bit Marmite, given such a potent flor -like aroma infusing the stone fruit scents. The palate is very well balanced with a crisp line of acidity, notes of pear and lemongrass, and a little yeastiness toward the nutty, smoky finish. Very fine, but not for everyone.
