The 2017 Kershaw Deconstructed Lake District Bokkeveld Shale CY95 (try getting that right when ordering in a restaurant!) has a very pure, focused bouquet of orange pith, crushed limestone, linseed oil and light honeysuckle scents, all brilliantly delineated. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity that lends immense tautness. Hints of lemon curd and brioche are joined by orange peel and quince toward the finish. This Chardonnay is a wonderful offering from Kershaw.

On the nose, the 2017 Lake District Bokkeveld Shale CY95 Deconstructed Chardonnay is shy and not as flamboyant as others in the range. The palate presents a good citrus core with oak character. However, the alcohol sticks out a touch. Made from the Dijon clone 95, these Chardonnay vines are grown in shale soils. The wine is good but seems to be lacking the complexity of the other Kershaw Chardonnays, ultimately ending with a decent finish of above-average complexity. More effort is needed here. 760 bottles were made.
Struck match, sulphidic funky bonfire notes with green-apple fruit. Has an extra degree of intensity that takes it beyond the normal sphere of Chardonnay flavour. Truly grand cru level. (RH)
