Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2023-2032, Josh Raynolds, Feb 2020

Lurid ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe raspberry and cherry, along with suggestions of allspice, garrigue and succulent flowers. Juicy, seamless and appealingly sweet, offering sappy red fruit preserve, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that deepen steadily with air. Shows the generous character of the vintage but there's plenty of energy here as well. Finishes very long and smooth, with rising tannins and a strong echo of florality.

Not yet bottled, the 2017 Gigondas La Gille offers a beautiful bouquet of savory red fruits, potpourri, dried flowers, and violets. Incredibly elegant, fine, and polished on the palate, it shows beautiful intensity with a Burgundy-like elegance and seamlessness. In addition to the Château de Beaucastel releases, the Perrin family also releases a bevy of brilliant wines under their Famille Perrin label. Certainly, the Gigondas releases are the standouts, yet readers shouldn’t miss their Vinsobres releases; the flagship Les Hauts De Julien possibly one of the finest Syrahs dominated blend made in the southern Rhône!

The medium to full-bodied 2017 Gigondas La Gille comes across as slightly floral and tea-like on the nose, backed by ripe cherries. It's not as concentrated or structured as some vintages, seemingly more about harmony and drinkability.

Cask sample. Juicy red fruit, with cranberry juice fighting against something more bitter and tangy on the palate. Fine but furry tannin. Punchy alcohol and full body. Like their Vacqueyras, this is quite a tough drink at present. (RH)
