Punteggio 17.5/20 · Da bere 2020-2028, Jancis Robinson MW, Nov 2022

91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc. Matured for 18 months in barriques (80% new). Glowing crimson. Introvert with some sweet menthol – Merlot? Velvety texture and notable sweetness. Could be Ornellaia? Flattering but I’m aware of the alcohol. And ripe tannins only on the very end. (JR)

The 2017 Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon, which is blended with 9% Cabernet Franc, is fermented in concrete and matured using the rotating OXO system in French barriques. It needs a little time to coalesce but eventually offers enticing aromas of mint, juniper and red plummy fruit. The sweet, rich palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins and strong menthol notes toward the finish, which, to be honest, pales in terms of complexity next to the 2017 Syrah. Not bad, though not the pick from Boekenhoetskloof’s latest releases.

Bold and juicy black fruits fill the glass of the 2017 Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon and mingle with rose petals and hints of cinnamon. The florals are soft and delicate on the palate. The wine is rich and bold and structured with well-defined tannins. The finish is fresh, vibrant and long, with good structuring tannins and a full body. This wine is showing good complexity. It was traditionally vinified in concrete tanks then aged in the newly installed Oxoline system, comprised of French barriques. 15,000 bottles produced.

An increasing proportion of Cabernet Franc apparently because it retains aroma and freshness better in hot, dry summers than Cabernet Sauvignon. Mid to dark crimson. Some real grace here on the nose. Round, gentle tannins with a sweet undertow and a beginning, middle and end. Light charge of fine tannins. (JR)
