FINE+RARE, Oct 2019

This week's release of the new 50 Year Old from one of Speyside’s most loved distilleries, Glenfarclas, will be of great note to whisky collectors. The Glenfarclas 50 Year Old brings together a prestigious name, excruciating rarity and an exquisite spirit, and with only a handful of desirable bottles to offer, I expect these will be keenly sought after. Specially selected by George Grant, only 146 decanters have been filled with this half century aged whisky. Filled at the natural cask strength of 40.6% ABV this Single Malt is said to be a “perfect combination of sherry, spice and alcohol which results in an extremely long, beautiful finish. A wonderful example of Glenfarclas at 50 years old”. The distillery has been in the family ownership of the Grants of Glenfarclas since 1865, and is now under the direction of 5th and 6th generations. This is something that resonates strongly with the legions of fans across globe who appreciate the traditional production methods deployed by the family. This 50 Year Old started its journey as a spirit which was twice distilled in a traditional, direct fired, copper pot still and filled into the finest Spanish Sherry oak casks in which to lie maturing for over 50 years in the famously cool Glenfarclas dunnage warehouses. Befitting of a whisky of such rarity, the Single Malt has been bottled in a crystal decanter created by Glencairn Crystal, hand decorated in copper with a heavy copper stopper. The decanter sits within a red mahogany piano-finished gift box, reflecting the autumnal hues of Speyside. I am sure this release will delight whisky connoisseurs and so are thrilled to have an, albeit limited, allocation on release.

Just pause for a moment before tasting. 50 years. What has happened in the world during that time? How have you changed? What has it done to the whisky? Added a quiet elegance. It brings to mind elements of long-dried concentrated fruit and nut, damson, even smoke. The tannins are initially dusty, but a splash of water adds a fresh potpourri perfume. Is it expensive? For something that's spent 50 years in a cask? No, it isn't. (937 bottles) £1800
