Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2020-2026, Josh Raynolds, May 2020

Pale gold. Powerful orange, melon and peach nectar aromas show impressive clarity and take on a sexy floral nuance as the wine opens up. Silky and densely packed, offering vivid citrus and pit fruit and candied ginger flavors complemented by a subtle anise quality. Finishes with strong mineral cut and powerful thrust, leaving pit fruit and lemon curd notes behind.

Rich, full, lots of power but not the best definition to the fruit. Vague peachiness. Lots of oak spice. Bitter notes to finish. (RH)

A bigger, richer wine, yet still vibrant and fresh, the 2017 Condrieu Côteau du Chery had just been bottled but certainly wasn’t showing any worse for it. It offers more buttered citrus, tangerine, honeysuckle, and white flowers, and is medium to full-bodied, powerful, and concentrated. It picks up plenty of salinity and minerality on the finish and is a great Condrieu that will drink well for 4-5 years. Based just south of the town of Condrieu, Andre Perret continues to fashion some of the most profound Condrieu out there. In addition to his top single vineyards, don’t overlook his base Condrieu as it offers incredible quality and classic characteristics year in, year out. In addition to the Condrieu, he makes two elegant Saint Josephs that are closer in style to a Côte Rôtie than a Saint Joseph from the southern part of the appellation.

Tasted from barrel, the 2017 Condrieu Chery is simply textbook stuff, with floral and apricot notes that are fresh and vibrant, flamboyant yet balanced. It's full-bodied but floats above the palate rather than weighing it down, with tremendous length on the silky finish.
