Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2017-2028, David Schildknecht, Vinous, Jun 2017

Ripe white peach is accented by toasted hazelnut and reinforced by 12 grams of residual sugar on a nonetheless dry-tasting palate. Peach kernel piquancy adds stimulating counterpoint to the richness of fruit. Lees-enrichment has not precluded admirable transparency to stony and ashen notes, and subtle salinity serves for saliva-inducement on a succulently sustained yet prominently mineral finish. I hope my conservative prognosis of ageability will prove overly so, but the new Batterieberg has yet to establish a track record in that regard, not to mention since the stylistic shift that took place in 2014 (featuring lower sulfur and longer élevage ).

The 2015 Riesling Enkircher Zeppwingert is a selection of eight small terraces with ungrafted vines that are 100+ years old. The wine contains more residual sugar than usual (14 grams per liter) since the fermentation stopped naturally. Bottled at the end of August, the wine offers a beautifully pure, fresh and precise but also intensely aromatic and concentrated Riesling bouquet intertwined with herbal and slatey but also orange flavors. Rich, round, dense and complex on the palate but also vital, finessed and delicate, this is a gorgeous medium-dry Riesling of great elegance, tension and mineral expression. The sweetness is perfectly integrated and the finish endlessly salty, revealing a great purity and finesse. Total production: 800 bottles.

Like the other single-vineyard bottlings from Immich-Batteriberg, this reaches 12% alcohol, but there a few grams of unfermented grape sweetness left over after fermentation. It smells like being in a pine forest after rain (honestly!), and on the powerful palate there are a lot of herbal notes. Then comes the silky, smooth, long finish. Very unusual and fascinating.
