From their vineyard in Alexandra, just above the Earnscleugh Valley. Aged in French barriques, 25% new, for 11 months. Definitely the most complex of the Two Paddocks Pinots. Suave, even Beaune-ish. Pretty. (JR)

Alexandra subregion. Organic. Proportion of whole bunch increased for structure, as new oak has fallen. Pale ruby, with some garnet glints. Spicy, with some meat hints and certainly a touch of dried thyme. Some coriander oak tones too. On the palate the thyme is more assertive, without being overpowering, with flinty mineral and some salinity too. Light, fine tannins. Brisk acidity and wild-strawberry fruit. Long, savoury finish. Arguably the world's southernmost vineyard, Two Paddocks' 2016 The Last Chance Pinot Noir is a bit firm and taut. Herbal-stemmy notes (it's 50% whole cluster this vintage) accent cherry aromas, while the flavors turn darker on the palate, heading toward charred oak, blackberry and plum. Give this one a bit of time to pull itself together and drink it from 2020.
