Saturated ruby. Ripe blackberry, violet pastille, licorice and mineral scents are complemented by a spicy cracked pepper nuance. Palate-coating black and blue fruit, cola and spicecake flavors show sharp focus, and a hint of cola builds in the glass. Supple and broad on the long, energetic finish, which is framed by smooth, slow-building tannins.

The 2017 Côte Rôtie offers more tart cherries, earthy, herbal nuances, and leather, and it’s medium-bodied, has good balance, and ripe tannins. The earthy, old school vibe won’t be loved by everyone, but it’s a solid effort to drink over the coming decade.
Bright violet color. Lively, spice-accented cherry and blackberry aromas are complemented by smoky mineral, olive and floral nuances. Offers plant dark fruit and spicecake flavors along with hints of licorice and woodsmoke that build on the back half. Silky and focused on the incisive finish, which features supple tannins and lingering floral and cracked pepper qualities.
90% Syrah, 10% Viognier. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Oak spice is front and centre on the nose, almost completely eclipsing the fruit. Shame, because there are clearly some very pretty grapes involved here. (RH)
