2016 Bernkasteler Doctor Auslese GK (3 Star)

Molitor's first Doctor (Markus Molitor began a 12-year lease of 1,300 square meters last year) was bottled in two versions, one dry (100 points) and one sweet. This is the sweet Doctor that will be auctioned this year in September. The 2016 Riesling Bernkasteler Doctor Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) –Auction– opens with an incredibly pure, fresh and smoky nose that doesn't give any signs of botrytis or even sweetness. This is just very fine Riesling from one of the most prestigious (and expensive) vineyards in all of Germany, on a steep slope straight behind the village. Molitor's plot is located between the one from Wwe Dr Thanisch-Thanisch and the one from Thomas Haag's Schloss Lieser. On the palate, Molitor's Doctor is a generously lush, elegant, voluptuous, salty-piquant and structured Auslese with citrus flavors and highly finessed mineral grip in the finish. This is so stimulating and mouthwateringly salty that you have to swallow the wine in large amounts. I said the same about the dry Auslese that shows even more complexity even though it was picked the same day. The sweet Doctor Auslese was selected vine-by-vine from overripe and slightly botrytized grapes. Tight and compact, this needs time to gain even more finesse.
