Another in a succession of terrific vintages, the 2016 Coleraine is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, aged in 70% new French oak barrels. It's classic Bordeaux in style, outlining notes of tobacco, earth and cassis with cedar and baking spices. Of course, the fruit is more intense than in most Bordeaux wines, showing ample freshness to go along with richness and depth, while the medium to full-bodied palate is silky, framed by fine-grained tannins that give shape and length to the finish.

The 2016 Coleraine feels a little disjointed on the nose, missing the depth and concentration of the 2013, for example. There are blackberry jam and boysenberry aromas at first, but when I expect them to build into something more, the bouquet remains rather static. The medium-bodied palate offers light tannin and sour cherry, redcurrant and cranberry flavors framing a grainy-textured finish that just fades a little sooner than I would have liked.
