Deep ruby. Smoky blackberry, cherry compote and floral pastille scents are complemented by deeper-pitched notes of olive paste and cola. Supple and open-knit, offering pliant black and blue fruit flavors that put on weight with air. The smoke and olive qualities repeat on the very long, broad finish, which is nicely shaped by gentle, harmonious tannins.

The 2012 Cote Rotie l'Eglantine has pretty notes of rose petal and sappy flowers intermixed with classic raspberry, pepper and subtle bacon fat. It's medium-bodied, with good concentration, and a tannic, firm finish that begs for more cellar time. Give it another 2-3 years and drink bottles through 2025.
