The most reputed soil to grow Savagnin in Jura is the blue marl and that's what you find in the Les Chalasses vineyard, whose Savagnin Vert vines (a particular strain of Savagnin) were planted in 1933 and are the source for my favorite ouillés Savagnin chez Ganevat: the 2013 Les Chalasses Marnes Bleues and the special Les Vignes de Mon Père. As most of his wines, it's sold as a Côtes du Jura and follows the same élevage as most withes - two years in used demi-muid. There are notes of beeswax and pollen, mineral and hints of white flowers; it is subtle, complex and elegant, hinting at terrific balance. The nose kept changing in the glass and revealing new nuances every few minutes. The balance, intensity and purity is mind-boggling, sharp, pure, straight, linear, clean and extremely long. This has to be one of the greatest Savagnin in the world. I'd love to see this wine in a few years, as I guess it's going to be even better.

Creamy, cedar-infused aroma. Rich and full in the mouth yet intensely fresh. Smoky citrus. Fills the mouth but drives with freshness to a long finish. Fabulous. (JH)
