Moving to the reds, the base 2015 Saint Joseph is terrific, and worthy of a case purchase. Olive tapenade, smoked meats, peppery dark fruits, and a touch of minerality all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, balanced, classically styled Saint Joseph. It’s ideal for drinking over the coming 10-15 years. Domaine Bernard Gripa covers 16 hectares spread between Saint Péray and Saint Joseph. It’s a family run estate, yet the helm is firmly in the hands of the talented Fabrice Gripa, who continues to keep this estate up at the top of the pyramid in Saint Joseph and Saint Péray.

After some stellar whites, I admit being disappointed by Gripa's 2015 Saint Joseph. It's still a very good wine, but coming from granite slopes around Mauve and Tournon, it shows more winemaking than terroir. Vanilla and mocha notes speak of the oak, while stemmy-green notes speak to a chunk of whole-bunch fermentation. Those make it hard to find the tart, tangy red fruit in this medium to full-bodied wine.
