The 2016 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett (White Capsule) is deep and concentrated on the complex, citric and slatey nose but still discreet in its fruit aromas. This is serious Riesling at 10.5% alcohol! Dry but round and intense, with a creamy texture, fine tannins and lush fruit, the Würzgarten has a remarkable mineral expression, but there is not much Mosel charm and primary fruit at this early moment. Early? Well, yes. It's early March 2018, and the wine is only slowly starting to develop. The finish, however, is dense, lush, compact, very fine, well-structured and perfectly balanced.

A sumptuous and delicious nose made of whipped cream, yellow peach, cassis, raspberry, candied mango and spices leads to an Auslese styled wine with juicy cream and ample juicy fruits on the palate. The wine is animating, smooth and delicate in the very long and juicy finish. This is quite superb in a comparatively rich but no less satisfying style for the category. Molitor has selected two different Kabinett wines from the Wurzgarten. The "regular" 2016 Riesling Urziger Wurzgarten Kabinett (Golden Capsule) has the AP number #62 and opens with a very clear, fresh and spicy bouquet that is still nicely reductive yet subtle and elegant. Lithe but salty and fruity on the palate, this is a spicy-piquant picture book Kabinett from the Wurzgarten that shows a beautiful lightness and finesse. 7.5% alcohol. Bottled in June 2017; tasted in March 2018. Mar 2018, www.robertparker.com
