Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2019-2025, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, Feb 2019

The 2013 McCrone Vineyard Pinot Noir comes from vines that were planted in 2002 to five different clones (Abel, UCD5, 115, 667, 777). It boasts scents of roses and cherries, is medium to full-bodied on the palate and has a supple, creamy texture, while a hint of mocha marks the long, velvety finish.

A deeply spicy and earthy expression of Martinborough pinot noir, this offers up plenty of exotic cherries and spiced cola, while the oak adds cinnamon and other baking spices. Musky fragrances really set this off, as do the sappy foresty notes. The palate has assertive tannins and is finely defined, gently drying and confidently expressed. A wine of profound structure. This is boldly appealing.

Just released, debut single-vineyard bottling . 40% whole-bunch pressed. Originally established for the McCrones of Oregon, Carlton, who also have a vineyard there that Ken Wright vinifies. Quite a lot of clay. Planted in 2001-2 with the same clonal mix as Ata Rangi. Bright crimson. Savoury and subtle. Sweet and floral. Chiselled and jewelly. Lovely and bright. Lots of fine tannins. Edgy. (JR)
