Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2028-2050, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Apr 2018

The 2016 Maximin Grünhaus Abtsberg Riesling Kabinett –No 19– (Versteigerung) displays a clear, flinty and beautifully reductive though delicate bouquet with bright Riesling and crunchy slate aromas. Lush and piquant with great finesse and mineral tension, this is a well-structured and very salty Abtsberg Kabinett with a persistent, aromatic finish. This is an impressive Kabinett with huge aging potential. Tasted March 2018.

Site-typical white peach and lime are tinged with woodsmoke and crushed stone on a subdued nose and a subtly creamy, delicate palate. While this lacks the effusively fruity charm of the corresponding Bruderberg or the striking transparency to mineral notes currently on display in the Herrenberg, one should bear in mind that Abtsberg is often slower to reveal itself. Thyme, wintergreen, mint, peach kernel and white currant add cooling, piquant and tingling nuances in a lingering finish underlain by wet stone.

Smells unexpectedly ripe and spicy – in a Ruwer context – but also a light smoky/fumy note. Rounded by the lemony sweetness on the palate even with a piercing core of fresh citrus that takes you to a long and balanced finish. Beauty is all in the balance and long finish. GV (JH)

A sophisticated Kabinett, which at this early stage reveals merely tantalising glimpses of mouth-watering citrus fruit, cool minerality and fresh green herbs. (MS)
