Bright violet. Mineral-accented cherry, dark berry and violet scents are complicated by hints of olive, cracked pepper and licorice. Seamless and broad on the palate, offering juicy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter and livelier with air. A subtle floral pastille note appears on the clinging finish, which shows good delineation and harmonious tannins.

The 2015 Saint Joseph Clos De Cuminaille (aged 16-18 months in 30% new French oak) is a medium-bodied, balanced, incredible easy drinking effort that has quality aromas of red fruits, underbrush, spice and leafy herbs. Drink it anytime over the coming 6-8 years. Located in the northern part of Saint Joseph, this family-run estate has produced a bevy of high quality, noteworthy wines in both 2016 and 2015. Despite seeing plenty of new oak, I nevertheless find a very traditional style in the wines from Gaillard.
Some darker hues of plum and toasted spices. A peppery edge on the palate. Dark chocolate, cassis and dark plum flavors to close it out. Tannins are ripe and smoothly rendered. Drink now.
There are two other St Joseph releases. Coming all from a single vineyard in the northern part of the appellation (this site was originally planted in 1981 and has sandy, granite soils), the 2015 Saint Joseph Clos de Cuminaille (100 cases) is 100% Syrah that will see 16-18 months in 30% new barrels. This inky-colored St Joseph offers terrific notes of chocolaty dark fruits, roasted herbs, licorice and espresso roast, medium to full-bodied richness and ripe, polished tannin. It’s a beautiful wine.
